Registry of Deeds

The Registry of Deeds is a constitutional office administered by the Register of Deeds in accordance with Maine State law. This office serves as the official repository for recording and maintaining legal documents related to real property transactions and interests.  Under Maine law, the Registry of Deeds is charged with protecting, maintaining, and preserving all public land records entrusted to its care. We are dedicated to upholding the statutory requirements governing these records while delivering efficient and professional service to the public.

Our Registries safeguard land records dating back to 1808 in the Southern District and 1846 in the Northern District.  These records are preserved for public access and historical reference.  Aroostook County computerized records starting in January 1960 for both our Southern and Northern Districts.  A computer is available for public use at both Registry of Deeds North and Registry of Deeds South.

Registry Roles & Responsibilities

Please note that the Registry of Deeds cannot provide legal advice or professional guidance. The records database maintained by this office is not intended to replace consultation with a qualified legal professional.  Individuals seeking assistance with document preparation, legal interpretation, or title matters should contact an attorney or title company.

Pursuant to Maine law, Registry staff are prohibited from conducting research on behalf of the public. Staff may assist users in navigating the computerized index system to locate recorded documents and plans; however, they may not interpret documents, provide legal opinions, or offer commentary regarding the contents of records maintained by the Registry.
